Meter (ταξίμετρο)

The dashboard fare-calculator in a taxi that tallies distance and time into a running total.

The meter is the small box on a taxi dashboard that displays the running fare. It combines a flag-fall (a one-time start fee) with a per-kilometre rate that varies between two tariffs:

  • Tariff 1 — daytime, inside city — €0.74/km.
  • Tariff 2 — night (00:00–05:00), or anywhere outside the city limit — €1.29/km.

By Greek law the meter must be visible to the passenger, switched on at the start of the ride, and a receipt provided on request. Disputes over meter tampering or wrong tariff selection are unfortunately not rare on airport runs — which is part of why pre-booked private transfers exist.
